A Bold New Chapter in Rye Whiskey

Fortune's Fool’s Overture Takes the Stage (Part 1 of 3)

We sat back down again with our friend Juliet Schmalz, the mastermind behind Fortune's Fool whiskey. Remember Fortune's Fool's wildly popular first release The Prelude, the smooth-drinking rye whiskey that took the whiskey world by storm? Well, get ready for The Overture! Fortune's Fool is back with a brand-new release – The Overture. Building on the success of the Prelude, this next rye whiskey delivers the same mellow, easy-drinking sip with a bold and unique twist that'll tantalize your taste buds.

The Overture Makes a Grand Entrance

The Overture isn't just another curtain call, this release boasts a 30-barrel dump, a significant leap from the Prelude's 10-barrel batch. This not only signifies the growing demand for Fortune's Fool but also allows for more complexity and a refined final product. With roughly 6,800 bottles produced, The Overture is poised to make a big splash in the rye whiskey world.

The Prelude was aged 2 years and 8 months, the Overture benefits from an additional seven months in the barrel. This extra time allows the flavors to mature beautifully, resulting in a richer and more complex profile.  Juliet even sheds light on their unique aeration process, explaining, "We dumped on a Monday, but didn't bottle until Thursday, allowing it to aerate and marry a bit," further contributing to the whiskey's smoothness.

Fortunes Fool’s The Overture

Sweet, Smooth, and Rye-volutionary

The Overture, despite its rye mash bill, boasts a distinct character compared to the Prelude.  Juliet describes it as having an enticing "sweet caramel" aroma, with a thicker, luxurious mouthfeel.  But don't be fooled by its smoothness – this rye whiskey is sure to convert even the most hesitant rye skeptics. Expect a delightful interplay of flavors with hints of maple, brown sugar, and caramel, culminating in a gentle warming, baking spice finish that reminds you this is a rye, perfect for both seasoned bourbon drinkers and adventurous newcomers.

Don't Miss Your Curtain Call

While production has increased, the Overture is expected to sell out quickly, mirroring the fate of its predecessor, the Prelude. As Juliet says, "once it's gone, it's gone," making it a coveted addition for collectors and rye whiskey enthusiasts alike. Distribution is expanding, but for guaranteed access, check with your local liquor stores beforehand.

A Standing Ovation for Fortunes Fool Overture

With the Overture, Juliet Schmalz solidifies her reputation as a creative and visionary distiller. This rye whiskey boasts a unique flavor profile, exceptional smoothness, and a commitment to sustainability, making it a standout in the Fortunes Fool lineup. Whether you're a seasoned rye aficionado or simply seeking a delightful sipping experience, The Overture is a must-try.  So, keep your eyes peeled on store shelves and grab your bottle before the curtain falls!

Sustainability Takes Center Stage

One of the most captivating aspects of the Overture lies in Juliet's commitment to innovation and sustainability.  Barrel reuse takes center stage here. The empty Overture barrels were shipped to Mexico for tequila production (more to come on that!), showcasing a resourceful approach that minimizes waste and paves the way for exciting future collaborations.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of our interview with Juliet Schmalz, where we delve into the exciting world of Fortunes Fool's upcoming bourbon release and her foray into tequila!
